Position Description:

Position Title:    Registrar in Geriatric Medicine
Rotation:    3 or 6-month rotation
Supervisor:    Director of Aged Care

Organisational context:

The Royal Melbourne Hospital provides extended health care, rehabilitation, community rehabilitation and support for aged and disabled people. Its services include geriatric evaluation and management, rehabilitation, Aged Care Assessment Service, specialist community based programs, multidisciplinary clinics and various forms of residential care. The Aged Care program also provides an inpatient consultant service to the City campus.

Duties:

  • Oversees the daily management of in-patients of the Wards to which he / she is attached (Royal Park Campus: AC1, AC2, AC3, TCP, residential care: City Campus: 6SE/RAC, TRAC, MAPU, orthogeriatric/trauma.
  • Supervises the work of the Hospital Medical Officer (HMO) attached to the Wards.
  • Provide ward based teaching to HMOs and nursing staff.
  • Work under the supervision of the Geriatricians.
  • The Registrar will be expected to be the on call Registrar according to the roster.
  • Attend weekly Ward rounds, Case Conferences and meetings.
  • Attend weekly Clinical Meetings and HMO/Registrar Tutorial sessions.
  • Attend outpatient clinics and/or ACAS depending on the ward attachment.
  • Satisfy advanced training for FRACP if an advanced trainee.
  • The TRAC attachment is a full time acute consultation service.

Selection Criteria (essential):

  • A qualified medical practitioner registered with the Medical practitioner’s Board of Victoria.
  • Well developed clinical skills in the assessment and management of hospital patients.
  • An ability to work and make clinical decisions independently.
  • A commitment to provide high quality clinical care to older people.
  • A ability to supervise the activities of more junior medical staff.
  • An ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Well development organisational skills.
  • A commitment to developing and improving professional skills and work practices.

Preferable:

  • Successful completion, or currently studying for Part 1 of the FRACP.
  • Previous experience in the clinical care of older people.
  • Previous work experience within the setting of a multi-disciplinary team.

Salary and Conditions:

  • According to the Hospital Medical Officer’s Award.

Training:

  • Attendance at the weekly teaching sessions as part of the Western Consortia is expected.

Research Opportunities:

  • The unit has a strong academic base with research interests in dementia and delirium, falls and balance, pain, and service delivery/models of care. The unit is linked with the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) which is involved in a very wide range of research activities.

Patient/Unit outline of department:

The Aged Care Program delivers both inpatient and outpatient services.

Inpatient:
•    It has 84 GEM beds in 4 wards, 3 on the RP Campus and 1 on the city campus.
•    One ward, AC1 provides a specialist dementia and delirium assessment service.
•    The unit also co-manages elderly patients in MAPU, orthopaedics and trauma.
•    It provides a consultancy services to all wards at the city campus.
•    A Transitional Care unit.
•    A slow stream rehabilitation unit for younger patients shared with Rehabilitation Medicine.

Outpatient:
•    Aged Care Assessment service
•    Specialist clinics:
o    CDAMS.
o    Falls and balance.
o    Pain.
o    Continence.
o    Wound.
o    Movement disorders.
