Diabetes and Endocrinology Registrar

Name of Unit: Diabetes and Endocrinology

Position:
Diabetes and Endocrinology Registrar

Diabetes and Endocrinology at RMH has two RCY positions and is widely acknowledged as one of the best Endocrine training sites in Melbourne.

The Department is headed by Professor Peter Colman and has a total of 13 Endocrinologists working in its clinical service.

The inpatient service includes the Diabetes Foot Unit which is run by A/Prof Paul Wraight.  This service is one of a handful of dedicated foot units in the country.
The outpatient service includes diabetes clinics, including one for young people with type 1 diabetes transitioning from paediatric care and an Endocrine Clinic which includes a wide range of general endocrine problems.  There is also a Thyroid Cancer clinic and multidisciplinary thyroid cancer meeting.  The Department runs Endocrine Services at Peter MacCallum Clinic providing opportunities for further training.
There are opportunities for training in Endocrine pathology with Dr.Cherie Chiang who has a combined appointment in Endocrinology and Pathology.

Trainees are closely mentored by consultant staff with regular one to one education sessions and readily available clinical training in clinics and on the wards.

Currently, there is no on call duty for registrars.  However, there is extensive experience in managing metabolic emergencies in the position.

The Department has a strong research culture with virtually all consultants having post graduate degrees.  There are thus strong opportunities for research in many different aspects of Diabetes and Endocrinology.
